Scholarship Application Tips
- Request letters of recommendation early. Start with four; two teachers, one administrator or guidance counselor, and one community member. You may need others for some applications. Provide an academic resume when asking for a letter.
- Gather all application materials early. This includes letters, copies of your transcripts, an academic resume, essays, and mailing supplies. Keep a calendar of all application deadlines and a file of all your materials.
- Looking at essay prompts, practice writing several. As difficult as it is for many students, toot your own horn, sing your own praises. They need to hear about what a great scholarship candidate you are!
- Make sure you follow ALL application instructions. Every application will be different. Do you mail it? Email it? Deliver it to the Career Center? Do they want official transcripts or unofficial? Do they want materials in a certain order?
- Have someone proofread your application.
